Maria allen

Maria has been learning and working in Waldorf schools since 2006 and is deeply committed to making Waldorf education accessible to families from all walks of life. She began her journey at a Waldorf-inspired charter school—Winterberry in Anchorage, Alaska—then continued her studies through Taruna College in New Zealand and the LifeWays/Asheville training. Maria also holds a degree in Music Education (Elementary Music and Choral Conducting) from Converse College in South Carolina.

A founding board member of Asheville Waldorf School, Maria has been part of the school’s faculty and staff since its inception. Her roles have included teaching Parent-Child classes, Nursery, Kindergarten, Grade 3, Music, and mentoring new teachers through both Asheville Waldorf School and the LifeWays/Asheville program. She has also taught in LifeWays/Jacksonville and at Rudolf Steiner College’s Community Learning Center in Anchorage, AK.

Maria currently serves as the school’s AWSNA liaison and has attended every North American Waldorf conference since COVID, continually deepening her understanding of contemporary challenges and opportunities in Waldorf education. As the parent of a child with a learning difference, Maria is especially passionate about helping families navigate support for their children's unique learning needs. She has seen firsthand that the healing aspects of Waldorf education benefit all children.

Maria lives with her beloved husband, Butch, and their daughters, Perry and Maisie. She enjoys tandem biking, singing, painting, swimming, contra-dancing, and studying Spanish.
