Steve Schnedler Memorial Scholarship Fund
Steve Schnedler was a devoted supporter of Asheville Waldorf School since its opening in 2011. Steve was present the day the school opened its doors, photographing our first classes. Thereafter, he was a quiet presence at assemblies and festivals; at one of the last he attended, Steve assumed the role of “Grandfather Earth,” acknowledging his respect for the foundational role nature plays in Waldorf education. This was also indicative of his steady, caring presence in the life of the school, coming to the aid of children and teachers in times of need.
Though he had no children of his own, Steve delighted in watching our students grow and was deeply moved by their kindness, creativity, and the capacities nurtured by our teachers and curriculum. He valued Waldorf education’s whole-child approach—teaching through the arts, cultivating imagination, and supporting the balanced development of head, heart, and hands. He especially loved the school’s rich music program—singing as part of daily activities, the strings orchestra, eurythmy movement with piano accompaniment, and chorus—all of which brought him great joy.
IN MEMORY OF GRANDFATHER STEVE
Quietly and generously, Steve provided tuition assistance to families in need, helping the school maintain its commitment to access for all seeking a Waldorf education, regardless of income. As a patent lawyer, he also provided valued counsel to the Board.
Always looking toward the future of the school, Steve supported the search for a site, viewing many potential properties. He would have been delighted to know the school found a wonderful location and went under contract for this new site just days after his passing.
In honor of Steve’s philanthropy in helping to lay a firm foundation for the school as it now launches into the world, the Steve Schnedler Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to help bridge the shortfall of tuition revenue created by the generous financial aid we offer, ensuring we can continue to provide high-quality programs to our students.
