Steve Schnedler Memorial Scholarship Fund
With tender hearts, we share the passing of Steve Schnedler, a devoted supporter of Asheville Waldorf School since its opening in 2011. Steve was present the day the school opened its doors, photographing the first classes that morning. He was a quiet presence at assemblies and festivals; at one of the last festivals he attended, Steve took the role of “Grandfather Earth,” reflecting his deep respect for the foundational role nature plays in Waldorf education. He was a steady, caring presence in the life of the school, often coming to the aid of children and teachers in times of need.
Though he had no children of his own, Steve delighted in watching our students grow and was deeply moved by their kindness, creativity, and the capacities nurtured by our teachers and curriculum. He valued Waldorf education’s whole-child approach—teaching through the arts, cultivating imagination, and supporting the balanced development of head, heart, and hands. He especially loved the school’s rich music program—the strings orchestra, eurythmy movement accompanied by live piano, and chorus—which brought him great joy. As a patent lawyer, he also provided valued counsel to the Board.
IN MEMORY OF GRANDFATHER STEVE
Quietly and generously, Steve provided tuition assistance to families in need, helping the school uphold its commitment to access for all who seek a Waldorf education, regardless of income. He also viewed many potential sites for the school and would have been so happy to know that, just days after his passing, the school went under contract for a beautiful new home. His philanthropy helped lay a firm foundation in the school’s early years.
Now, we have the opportunity to continue his legacy. In honor of his caring spirit and lasting impact, the Steve Schnedler Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to support families in need and ensure that this work of access, beauty, and whole-child education continues to flourish for generations to come.
